Hello,
We are moving to Sacramento from Redding. I didn't know if anyone could recommend neighborhoods to look at and those to avoid. We are planning on renting first. My job is downtown on the capitol mall and so I will need somewhere close to public transportation. we move frequently and have lived in bigger cities like Portland (OR) and Honolulu for extended periods. If anyone is familiar with Portland we really love the south east area. Especially around belmont, hawthorne, burnside and stark. Are there neighborhoods in walking distances to like book stores, trader joes/whole foods , coffee shops similar to these areas? Any input would be very helpful. Thanks!!

You should definitely check out the midtown area of Sacramento, which is directly east of downtown (starting at about 16th) and centered mainly on J, K, and L streets. It's less than a mile from where you'll be working. Midtown is actually very similar to the part of Portland you mention and is a very attractive, leafy neighborhood with many great shops, bars, restaurants, and other cultural amenities. The second saturday of every month they have a massive "art walk" that draws people in from all of the suburbs and the entire area really comes alive. Sac gets a bad rep sometimes for not having much going on for a city of its size but Midtown is really a great spot.

No Trader Joe's or Whole Paycheck in Midtown, but we do have the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op, and even our Safeway and Grocery Outlet aim for the same market, and there are some great small Asian markets in Southside. If you really need a TJ's fix, there is a Trader Joe's in East Sacramento on Folsom, 2-3 blocks from the 48th Street Light Rail station (like MAX trains but stops running after 9 PM.) Bookstores: Beers Books, Avid Reader, Time Tested, Richard L. Press Scholarly Books on the Arts, Book Collector, Newsbeat (magazines/newspapers.) Coffee shops: Temple Coffee, Naked Lounge, Java City (the original one), Old Soul, Mondo Bizarro, about a zillion others.

I bet you would like East Sacramento along Folsom Blvd. The zip code is 95816 and 95819. There are some great restaurants to walk to (33rd Street Bistro, One Speed) as well as coffee shops and even a Trader Joes!

It's an easy location to catch the bus or light rail to Capital Mall.

Homes are older and most are well maintained. It's a lovely area.
