I live out in Folsom and I'd like to find somewhere to view the Perseids meteor shower coming up in August. Any tips for somewhere dark, safe and relatively easy to drive to? Thanks!

Last year, I went camping at Caples Lake and that place was an awesome place to watch the meteor shower. You are far enough away from any light pollution to see everything and it was a pretty area with lots of stuff to see during the daytime.

But Caples Lake is up near Kirkwood, which may be further than you are willing to drive. Basically you want to go uphill and put some distance from population centers/light pollution. Your best bet would be to take 50 past Polluck Pines. Above Polluck Pines you are in the National Forest and the skys get much darker.

Alternatively, drive South on Latrobe Rd toward Drytown and pull over when its seems dark enough for you or you just aren't willing to drive further.

I was going to suggest exactly what edwardius did! Up beyond Sly Park on the Mormon Emigrant Trail, it is up on the ridge. Once you get up on the ridge, it's pretty incredible.

Latrobe Road or South Shingle is a pretty good suggestion, too .

Maybe hwy 49 between Coloma and Cool where you are not near any houses...like near the Cronan Ranch trailhead.

It's too late for the August Perseid shower, but the Rotary Club of Cameron Park built a community observatory in 2005 on the grounds of the Folsom Lake College - El Dorado Center campus on Missouri Flat Road in Placerville. The observatory is less than 5 minutes from the US 50-Missouri Flat intersection and has a 14-inch and a 17-inch telescope, as well as a 50-60 seat amphitheater for viewing the night skies. The observatory is open to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. More info: Community Observatory - El Dorado County, CA.

@Cameron Park Rick
That's a brilliant idea, and not too late for this year's Perseids! The observatory is even free on Friday, so we're planning to check it out.

Cheers!
