Is there any way to get around having the front license plate? I am moving from another state and don't want to add a front license plate to my car if I can avoid it.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a front license plate but you probably wouldn't get nailed for it I wouldn't think. Although I did get stopped numerous times for having too dark of window tint on my front windows.

People do get stopped and cited for not having a front license plate, if they're registered and licensed in CA. Only having one California plate is not in compliance with the law.

I think if you have a car registered in another state, you have so much time to get it registered in California. There used to be an additional $300 fee in registering cars from out of state in California, not sure if that fee is still in effect.

You might want to make an anonymous phone call to your local police station and ask them if a car from a state where front plates aren't needed will be ticketed in California. I say that only because it's impossible to get through to DMV.

And if you're really desperate, see if you can get hold of a CA license plate to put on the front. Any plate might do. When I registered my car from Minnesota and got the new Washington plates on it, we couldn't get the front plate off. So for a long while I had the plates of two different states on my car. No one even noticed.

If you have plates on your car from a state where no front plate is required you should not get a ticket, If you get one you can have it thrown out. It's fairly common to get pulled over if you don't have a front plate in California- the ticket doesn't amount to much but it's probably easier to go to DMV and get new plates. There is no $300 charge to register an out of state car in California.

Supposed to have front plate in CA, but unlikely you'll be cited.

Default License Plates

Car registered in Cali-drove it for more than 15 yrs w/o a front plate. I've never been stopped
However when I shipped my car to Texas put the plate on front. Didn't want any unexpected problems. When I got here I researched Texas, particularly in the city where I am. I got my answer ..although somewhat vague.

My mom has driven her car without a front plate since buying it in '04 without trouble. It came with the front plate, California car, but she didn't like the way it looked and took it off and bought plugs for the holes. It does look a lot better. It's a small risk. The ticket isn't big. Just save the plate somewhere and deal with the hassle if you get busted for it.
