My wife will be moving into the Roseville area in 2 weeks and we will be needing to get set up with a new credit union/bank. I was wondering if anyone has some good recommendations of a place that offers free checking or interest rewards account. I currently love my credit union as they pay 5% interest monthly on balances up to 20k and is a free checking acct.

Most if not all banks offer free checking* (with direct deposit). I'm actually in the process of switching from BofA to CapitalOne 360 for my checking needs. So far only downside I've run into is that I can't deposit cash as there aren't any CapitalOne banks around.

5%? Why change banks? My son moved to California from Nevada about 4 years ago and still uses the same Nevada Credit Union that he did when he lived there

If you want the top rated financially stable bank, then I suggest El Dorado Savings.

I will probably end up keeping my credit union in IL but will need a local branch to cash/deposit checks as well. I do have a capital one 360 account too. It used to be ING and they offered great interest rates years ago but not so much anymore but they have a nice investment account that is easy to use.

I'm a Golden 1 CU fan, myself. We've also been happy with Wells Fargo.

When I moved, I kept my local credit union also. I did online banking, but it was a problem to make a cash deposit. The closet branch was 2 hours away. So, then I looked at the highest rated banks in the area, and I found that most of the national, popular banks (i.e, Wells Fargo, BofA, Capitol One, etc) were rated B- or C or worse. I was looking for an A or A+ bank (credit unions are not rated the same way), and that's when I went with EDS. This was during the years of multiple bank failures/closures. I do use WF but only for my mortgage, and I returned to a local credit union when the hassle of banking from a distance because too much.

If your checks are automatically deposited, then banking from afar works fine. But if you want the ability to deposit cash, then you just need to make a decision on what criteria is important to you (i.e., convenience, customer service, stability, etc).

I banked at a local c.u for several years before it was acquired by SAFE c.u. It's been several years and I have had zero complaints to speak of. The only thing I wish there was more of is atm and branch locations but it's manageable. But the staff has always been on top of things and professional in my experience. Good luck in your search.
