It seems to me other than the postal service in west Sacramento and farming in woodland and the college in Davis that there isn't many large employers in the area. Am I correct?

Yes, there's limited jobs and in Yolo County, especially the traditional large employers you describe. When I lived in Davis I had a job there, but that's unusual unless you work for UC Davis. Most people in Yolo County commute to Sacramento County for work.

And that's a pretty traffic heavy commute too right?

Not really, it's lighter from Yolo County to downtown Sacramento than from the far more heavily populated suburbs in eastern Sacramento County or Placer/El Dorado County. West Sacramento was recently mentioned by the local Business Journal as the city with the shortest commute distances. A lot of the recently built neighborhoods (mostly still under construction) are within walking distance or bike riding distance from downtown Sacramento, where there are 70,000 or so jobs. Aside from the university and the port, Yolo County is mostly a rural/agricultural economy with a few recently built suburbs.

More of a rural area with a college town.
These days Woodland is fairly suburban but it's also largely a rural city. It's not really a suburb of anything as much as it is the city for a rural area. Davis is a college town. West Sacramento is suburban. Lots of state jobs, lots of shipping jobs (UPS, USPS, FedEx all have hubs in West Sacramento), some insurance and finance jobs. West Sacramento is pretty disconnected from the rest of Yolo County though and more an extension of Sacramento that happens to be across the county line. Between the three, however, they account for more than 75% of the population of Yolo County. The rest of it is very rural.

You keep referring to UC Davis as a "college". Are you aware it is a full-fledged university with a medical school (in Sac) , a law school and 30,000 students?

Some folks, the city included, consider "suburb" to be a size category between "rural" and "urban," although it's really just a variety of urban form. And yes, Woodland is more its own city than a suburb, although with growth restrictions in Davis and an ever-increasing "drive 'til you qualify" range around Sacramento, it may end up being more of a suburb of the Sacramento metro area as the old farm/railroad towns to the east (like Roseville and Folsom) have become. Although with the weir there will always be an undeveloped green belt between Woodland and Sacramento.

So, yes, the city, there aren't many major employers in Yolo County other than its major employers.

Sacramento doesn't really have any drive until you qualify. It's among the cheapest cities in the area to live in. Sacramento and Rancho Cordova are both right around $150/square foot. Roseville is close to $200. North Highlands is slighter cheaper than Sacramento at around $140/sq foot.
