I take the mild dry winters of San Diego ANYDAY over freezing cold Sacramento. The summer humidity sucks though in San Diego. I lived in San Diego for a long time before moving to Sactown.
I think what he means is that San Diego is still subject to cold spells that last a week or so. When it occurs it is still warmer there than in Sacramento, but 40 degrees is still chilly. Also keep in mind that Downton San Diego is moderated by the water. When it is 40 Downtown it is often in the mid and low 30s in the inland suburbs.

Ah that makes sense :-)
Yeah I remember some years ago when it was FREEZING in San Diego around 30 degrees was lowest I felt it.

Most winter days on coastal lows were 40-50 and highs 50-70 degrees. Still way warmer than Sacramento. When the zippers broke in my heavy coat I had to rush out to get a new winter coat. Fortunately I made it in time to pick one up. Really need it here.

Bear in mind: when temps plunge into 20's and low 30's in the Bay Area- SF is 42, which is also moderated by water influence. Same with San Diego: valley in the 20's and low 30's- SD is 41.

Have seen both cities plunged to 29 or even 28 in the last 40 years. Even in the water in both cities, especially during colder and drier windy spells.

San Francisco is 360 miles/5 degrees north of San Diego. The sea surface temperatures are also a factor. They are currently between 53 and 55 degrees west of San Francisco and 57 to 62 near San Diego. Also, the cold air in the Sacramento Valley flows west through the Delta and over San Francisco, which influences the winter temperatures there. It's also common for cold air to flow from the North Bay and over San Francisco.

Sacramento is 400 miles north of San Diego and Phoenix sits at a latitude a little north of San Diego. Probably around 40 miles or so.

I mean, it's ten degrees warmer in SD than Sacramento on average during the winter (60s vs 50s). Whether that's "WAY" colder is probably subjective.

I will say that this winter has been colder in SD than past winters, especially away from the water. Right now, however, it's 64f, and the nicest day we've had in a while. My zip code may nudge 70f tomorrow before dropping back to low 60s. But we've had more than our usual share of 50s in the daytime, 30s at night, and snow in the local mountains. We bundle up at times but kinda like it. I don't see Sacramento as being particularly cold, and the palm and orange trees speak to that. But I would call it chilly. Otherwise, what do you call Seattle, Chicago, NYC, St Louis, DC, etc, if "cold" is already spoken for?
