An out-of-town friend is coming to Sac and looking for a nice place for a date with dinner and dancing and I'm a fuddy duddy and no help at all.

She specifies "not club dancing" and, yeah, I have no idea what that means (that's what I get for hanging with young friends). They have transportation so it can be anywhere in the Sac area.

She says he likes funky music and his favorite band is Vulfpeck.

Also says was looking at Torch Club but doesn't know crowds down there. Wants really good live music, not a dance club.

I have no idea if all that even makes sense, but if anyone has any thoughts, I'd be grateful, thanks!

Sharon

Yeah, I second Shady Lady. Not for dinner though. But it's centrally located so it would not be hard to find dinner.

Shady Lady is great for dinner--especially their fried chicken and mac & cheese cubes, if they still have it, or the burger. Not sure if they feature many (or any) funk bands--not sure where you'd hear that sort of thing locally, but it's not really my scene. But Ace of Spades next door is where Parliament/Funkadelic plays when they're in town.

Wow, this is all great, helps to get such clear consensus for the Shady Lady. I'll pass it along, thanks!

Huh. Good to know. I guess I go too late at night to see anyone eating dinner though I've been there for brunch.

And it's not just a local opinion, either!

For Outside Sac, the wife and I went to the Torch Club a few months ago. It has an older, somewhat eclectic crowd with some dancing. We gave our table to an older couple in the 70's when we left around 10:30 that evening. Definitely a fun place to go with lots of character.

We ate dinner at a fantastic nearby restaurant that let us keep our car parked there while we walked a few blocks top the Torch Club. If you haven't seen anybody play a washboard, this is the place to go. Not trying to talk you out of the Shady Lady (sounds like a neat place) or any other places. Just trying to give you a recent experience of the club.

yeah, Torch is totally worth a look if you're looking for blues clubs or a certain amount of jazz, but I don't think they have a kitchen.

Wait a sec. There's a restaurant downtown that has its own parking lot?
