Not sure if you are still looking, but my Mother-in-law lives about 5 miles from the area you are looking at. (practically neighbors in that area). There's a good 50/50 mix of liberal and conservative ideologies in the area. Great sense of community despite the philosophical differences. The strict conservative couple that owns a large hazelnut farm would regularly host community bbqs for all the different types of neighbors to attend. There's a few Mennonite farmers in the area as well- they are extremely friendly people and helped my hippie inlaws on numerous occasions with their organic farm.

It's a beautiful area. My wife and I were actually married in the Spring Valley Community Center near there, and had our reception at a nursery just down the road from there.

Thanks! Yes we are still looking. Actually, we came away with quite a good feeling about the Salem area. I will definitely take a look at the Spring Valley area.

We have returned from our house hunting adventure!

We had a really good time. Not only did we visit both houses, but also explored both Salem and Washougal. I like Salem more than before, and Washougal well…

The weather was wonderful. Some rain and some sun. You should have seen the alpenglow on Mt. Hood in the evening! One of our favorite moments was standing on the covered front porch at the house in Salem looking across the green pastures and down the valley as a light rain was falling. So serene!

Speaking of houses, the Salem house has been eliminated. As I mentioned before, it is a spectacular property, and from the entrance of the long, apple tree lined driveway, the house seems quite nice, even elegant, but once we got close, and once we looked inside, we saw that there was a LOT of deferred maintenance to be done, and while some of the inside work is beautiful, a lot of it is very outdated and in need of repair. Especially the bathrooms and the kitchen. Yes, we could do the work, but we have already restored two houses and we are way done with that!

The Washougal House is beautiful. Historic, restored, and it has a very nice yard. We would have to finish the basement for my studio which wouldn’t be difficult. Mostly a concrete floor and some drywall.

There are a couple of problems though. The first being the price. The owners are asking $835,000.00, and our agent thinks that we should start negotiating at about $783,000. The problem is that we aren’t sure that we want to go much higher than $750,000 or $775,000. We have $800,000, and will have plenty of money after we sell the house we are in, but don’t want to put all of our unfertilized fowl embryos in one woven wicker container.

The second problem, and probably the one that worries us the most, is that the property is in a somewhat “unique” neighborhood. It is a mixture of really nice homes, and what I would call...well...let's just say...and I hope that this doesn't really upset people...not homes that I would live in.

Not a good sign, especially if we decide, in a couple of years, that we don’t quite fit the area and need to sell the house.

We are still thinking about the Washougal House, but the more we think about it, the less appealing it becomes.

It sounds like you have some experience with homes, so this probably goes without saying, but if the trend in your thinking is that it's becoming less appealing it probably wouldn't be a good purchase.

Good luck. Hope you find something you like!

I live in West Salem. Due to my unique work schedule I ended up renting a room from two of my good friends for the last three years. They are a married lesbian couple. I first rented from them in North Plains then followed them to West Salem where they bought a house. I recently moved out and bought my own house in West Salem just over the hill from them as they decided to start a family and now have two beautiful infant daughters. Not once in all of our time in West Salem have they ever had a single issue of discrimination. I think you would find the area pretty accepting. And that is surprising with the huge number of retired folks here.
