All,

I'm moving from the midwest to slc soon for work and I'm hoping to get some suggestions on neighborhoods to look at for a 1br rental. Ideally, I'm looking for a safe area with people my age(mid 20s) and not heavily lds, if possible. I'm a creative type of person; I work in multimedia, play music, enjoy art. Also, I like to go out 1-2 nights a week for drinks, so any neighborhood with good bars would be great.

I'll be working in Sandy and would like the commute to be 30 minutes or less. I've been been told downtown, sugar house, and around the u of u could be good places to look. So I'm wondering if you agree, have any other suggestions and if they are all safe areas to live.

thanks!

My 32-year old son (who DJs, likes independent film, and is a freelance graphic designer) lives downtown in the Artspace Rubber Company Apartments for several years and loves it. You'd be roughly a half hour away from Sandy, but the good news is that commuting from downtown to Sandy each morning (rather than visa versa), the heavy traffic is going to be going in the opposite direction. I would strongly suggest that you consider downtown. I think it would be the best fit for you.

Thanks! I will take a look at the Artspace Apartments.

The places you mentioned would be best. Avenues, around Liberty Park generally has a lot of activities, Downtown, or Sugarhouse.
I would try and look online on craigslist or ksl.com for independent landlord for apartments. I have a great one in the Aves, everything is always taken care of quickly and professionally. They generally don't try to nickle and dime you for every little nick on the wall.

Hey, I am also very interested in this. I am a 22 year old male moving to SLC for work right around June 1st. Have the same desires for social life as well.

Nick2MUFC - I dunno if you are considering getting a roommate but if you do let me know. My initial plans were to live in a 1br but the prices are kind of expensive for something nice.

leegro and nick2mufc - am now in the same boat as you two were when these were originally posted (mid 20s single straight male, moving to SLC for work before applying to b-school); would love to hear how things turned out (if you moved, where you lived, if you liked it, what you'd do if you were doing it over again, etc.)

Edit: Ugh... just responded to a post from 2012 that someone necromanced. Sorry about that. I've really got to look at the dates on these things.

If your pockets are deep or you're okay with roommates, Downtown, the lower Avenues, and Sugar House are indeed the best. If you're on a bit more of a budget I'd suggest Liberty Wells or Center City. - For tprhenr, SLC is a decent place for a young adult to live. The dating scene is rough for 20-something non-mormon males (but if you're Mormon it's fantastic), but overall it's a fun city with nearby outdoors and a good concentration of fun venues, bars and restaurants in Downtown coupled with a good economy and plenty of opportunity, though also plenty of competition for the best paying gigs.
