Looks like we may be relocating to work at Hill AFB (from southern California). I grew up in SE Idaho, so I'm familiar with the Utah area. We are looking to live in or around Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, or even as far south as Bountiful. Looking at houses East of I-15, possibly around HWY 89. We chose to look around these areas because we mainly want low crime, shopping close by, good schools, and decent priced housing.

The houses we are looking at would be 2,500-3,000 sq ft 4-5 bedroom, with a basement included typically. So what is everybody paying for electricity, gas, water, sewer, trash, and internet?

In the Mojave desert, this is what we currently pay annually for a 1,500 sq ft 3 bedroom home. Hoping to keep costs around the same in Utah since cost of living is so much more in California:

- Electricity - $1300 ($0.17 / KWH)
- Gas - $1500 (propane heater/water heater is very expensive)
- Water/Sewer - $900 (for tiny 1000 sq ft lawn)
- Trash - $200 (garbage and recycling bins)
- Internet - $600 (60 Mbps cable internet)
= total of $4,500

Thanks for any help you can provide! Look forward to hopefully be living in Utah soon!!!

3000 sf, 2-story home with full basement on .25 acre lot in South Ogden. Gas and electricity average $150/month (combined) and peaks around $200/month during August. Gas consumption is higher in winter, electricity higher in summer, so they kind of average out. City services include trash, culinary water, sewer and recycling for $52/month. Secondary water for outdoor watering is $100/year, and gets paid for on my property tax bill. Internet is $65/mo.

Thank you so much for the reply! Looks like your combined gas/electric is ~$800 less than me (for twice the size house!). And your water/sewer/trash is a few hundred cheaper. Just as I had hoped, utilities are much less than what I pay currently; thank you stupid california.

I forgot to post, our prices are with keeping the thermostat at 71 all winter, and 78 all summer. What about you elcee499?

Do you know if those prices are about the same as further down south in Layton/Kaysville area?

Anybody else have their average bill costs?

Awesome, thank you so much for the info! What do you set your thermostats to throughout the year? Is it gas heat and water heater? Just trying to get a feel for what's the norm around that area (gas or electric heat). Do you water a yard too?

We set the thermostat to 68-70 in the winter. in the summer, it is set to around 72-74.

We water our yard about 3 days a week, but it has some newish grass put in that is the low water kind, so it stays nice without a lot of watering. Plus our yard is only 1/8 acre - so very small lot.

We do have gas heat and water heater. Plus central air.

Perfect, thanks again for the information!

We loved the Layton area. Seems like every neighborhood is nice, even the older sides of town. And it's nice to be so close to stores everywhere. Can't beat the mountain views too!

Do you have any complaints about living in Layton? Any places to avoid looking for houses?

I live in West Valley City, but if you're curious monthly utilities for my 2,100 sq.ft house are roughly:

Electric: Average $35 (Up to $40, summer with an evaporation cooler that keeps the house at ~75* - whole house is LED lighting)
Gas: Average $30 (Up to $80, winter, gas furnace set to 68* while we're home and 60* while at work. Also have gas water heater.)
Recycle/Trash/Sewer: $18 - flat rate
Water: $30 (And $80 in June-August for the sprinklers and cooler, I live on 0.20 acres, maybe 50% is grass or garden.)
TV/Internet: $70 (Comcrap Xcrapity with about 20 channels and 50mbs)

So $150-250 a month, probably $2,400 annually.

Excellent, thanks for another comparison!

I don't have any real complaints. I love my neighborhood. The neighbors are all very friendly and nice. Its a great location because it takes me 5 min to get on I-15, and I am on 84 in about 10, and can get up to Snowbasin for skiing in just under 30 min. Which for us is per-fect.

I prefer the East side of Layton to the west side. I don't have a ton of knowledge about the difference, but the east side of Layton (east of I-15) seemed much preferable.

If I were to have any complaints, it would be just about the very suburban-ness of Layton. Really though I knew it was like this before we moved here, and knew the type of downtown and walkable city feel I love was not going to exist here, so I guess its not so much a complaint. Its nice, its quiet, there are some nice city ammenities, and it is close enough to things I want and need to do. Plus, where I live its just under a mile to the nearest grocery store, so I can walk, which is nice, since I despise driving if I can avoid it.
