Hi all,

we'll be visiting SLC in a couple months and hoping to explore eastern Idaho as well, for possible relocation.

Ideally, we'll ultimately end up in an outlying area, small population, and in a cheap very small cabin/house we will either buy or build.

But to get established, I was thinking the SLC and surrounding areas may be a good start as renters to get established into the area. We dont make a lot of money, but the thing I would like to avoid most is crime.

What are the places to avoid, and what are the good neighborgoods or towns/areas for that reason.

Thanks to anyone who can enlighten us.

Think I answered my own question with a good search. There are serious crime issues in some areas of the city and surrounding areas, sadly. But at least now I have an idea where.

The crime rate here is pretty low overall but areas to stay away from would be west valley and south salt lake mostly. south salt lake typically known as rosepark and glenndale areas. Honestly though the crime still isnt even that bad in those areas.

Also you should look over to tooele. Its about a 20-30 minute drive from downtown but houses are ALOT cheaper, crime rate is low and it seems to be a decent area

A lot of people like Stansbury Park, over that way.

Yep! Love it here! It is more of a suburban area though. I got the impression that the OP was looking more for a place that he could have a bit of a homestead. If he was interested in Tooele County, Eureka and Vernon might fit the bill. Land is cheaper that way and it is more of an outlying area than Tooele itself.

Try Delta also...

those are all pretty far from the city though. Tooele is still plenty close enough to make the daily commute to slc but you can get a house for 30-40k less

I'm looking for a place pretty close in walking distance to a shopping center and public transportation in the city. I need an Apartment in an apartment complex preferable where young people live and they don't discriminate or look down on minorites. With amenities like laundry room, work out room and pool would be nice. Probably near a university or college because my girlfriend is going back to school. Any suggestions?

Once again, links aren't working for me. Sorry this is a little hard to read but the info is here if you want to sort through it.

The Gateway is a major shopping center downtown.

The University of Utah is 2 miles east of downtown.

Our light rail public transportation system is called TRAX.

I'm not all that familiar with downtown SLC. I've always lived in the suburbs of SL valley. When I attended the U, I was in the Murray area and had no problem with the commute but I have my own car.

Good luck.

Try living downtown. Sugarhouse would also be a good option. Public transportation is excellent here, but I never have figured out how people without a car manage to do things like go grocery shopping. It would have to be an every day event if you were going to haul groceries home from the store by bus or train.
