Hi. We will be visiting SLC next summer and in looking for hotel lodging, I am also looking for safe walking distance to Temple Square. Not knowing anything about the area, what are the safe areas to walk at night ..and the best located hotels?
Thanks

Check out the Little America-littleamerica.com.
It is right on the Trax line, big rooms, fairly good coffee shop, nice pools and you can walk to the main attractions in SLC.
No place in SLC is unsafe to walk at night. That said, I would probably not choose to walk alone around the Pioneer Park area and some parts west of there. You will not have problems around temple Square-other than the panhandlers and some of the homeless folks-they seem to be fairly tame!

There is really no unsafe area in downtown SLC, particularly around Temple Square. My favorite hotel downtown is the Hotel Monaco, though it's not cheap. Many Temple Square visitors stay at the Carlton Hotel on South Temple. It's older and can be quirky, but it's very affordable, they offer discounts for genealogy researchers, and it's not a bad place.

Both Marriott properties are quite nice, though I'd stay at City Center rather than Downtown right now; there's a lot of construction around the Downtown Marriott.

Both the Little America and Grand America can be decent, but they are a little further from Temple Square than the others, and for the price I'd much rather stay at the Monaco. The Little and Grand are solely owned by Earl Holding, and I find his downtown landbanking/parking lot practices utterly despicable and can't in good conscience recommend anyone stay there.

LOL! I think this is the first time I've ever heard the Grand America Hotel described as merely "decent." You are talking about the only 5-star hotel in the state of Utah! Admittedly, it costs an arm and a leg to stay there, and the Monaco is an absolutely wonderful place -- still pricey, but much less than the Grand America.

Ouch Zionide-can you blame a girl for wanting a nice pool to hang out at? I agree that Earl may not be up for Citizen of the year but I will take a "decent" hotel for a little R&R over staying home on the occasional sleepover. If I chose to boycott every business/establishment that I had a problem with, well, I would just stay home in the dark with no water. For the record, I have not been inside a Walmart in 12 years!!

The quality of the materials in the Grand America is the only thing "5-star." The service is hit-or-miss and the building's sprawling, Vegas-gaudy, center-of-the-block design is horrid. The food services and spa are merely decent (and not worth the extreme prices, IMO).

Good for you re: Wal-mart! And I hear ya about the pool... I love having one when I travel, but both Marriott's have one (and City Center's is quite nice), as well as the Hilton, Radisson, Shilo, etc.

It's true that you can't boycott every business you have issue with, but Earl Holding's companies are near the very top of my list. I know this thread isn't about him, but the man isn't just not citizen of the year. He's actively--and regularly--harmed the urban fabric of downtown in favor of his own bottom line.

I made my final decision for the Carleton Hotel..they were just soo nice to talk to. It is the last of my reservations for a 19 day trip to Zion, Grand canyon North Rim, Bryce, Yellowstone and Grand teton national Parks! I am psyched!!

Have you made reservations at the National Parks yet? If not, I have absolutely got to make this recommendation for when you are at Zion (*note to native Utahns, pmjinnh corrected said "Zion," not "Zions" )...

There is a place in Springdale (which is just under a mile outside the Park) called the Desert Pearl. It is absolutely the most incredible place you have ever seen. It's pricey. Really pricey. But I promise you, it will be worth every penny. Request a room overlooking the river, upper level if you think you'd like the view from a balcony window, or ground floor if you would enjoy having a patio right on the lawn. It's hard for my to adequately describe the rooms, except to say that I have started going to Zion as an excuse to stay at the Desert Pearl as opposed to the other way around. Get your reservations early. Now is not too early since they book months ahead for the summer months.
