Hello ALL- this is my first time posting. I live in Lansing, MI and the job market is horrible. I have been without work for 6 months and thinking about relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah or near by cities. I have family over there. I wanted to know how is the job market in IT over there. I have 10 years experience in Technical Support, and almost done with my Masters, and my A+, Network +, and A+ IT technican certifications.

Do you know of any companies that help with relocating?
What are good cities to move to? I am looking for a sub, or surrounding area that is "mixed" and middle class, christian, area.

Also, is there any non-demonational churches over there? If any can you recommend the names?

When does school start over there? I have 3 children.

Depends on what you are used to for traffic/commute time, for where you shouold live. It's a long valley with really only one main north-south interstate.

Can't help you with jobs in IT, although there are jobs available in many fields - search this forum for postings from Timm Timm about getting hired/living here. I don't know of any busines that pays relocation.

There are plenty of denominations of churchs here, from Presbyterian to K2The Chuirch. Just to let you know, the LDS consider themselves Christian and would resent you implying they are not.

Utah as a whole is a very family-oriented place. School classes may be larger than you are used to but kids are, for the most part, polite and helpful to strangers.

Public schools seem to start between the 20th-28thish of August. There are private schools in the SL valley and perhaps elsewhere in the state. I don't have kids.

I would suggest asking your family members here in Utah for advice since they know you better than any of us here at CD do.

Just want to say, just because Utah's unemployment is low, doesn't mean there are necessarily jobs just sitting around waiting for someone to fill. It looks good % wise, but I personally have noticed the difference of the job market.

Melvin is right. Another factor is low wages. One of Utah's secrets is that it has maintained nearly full employment over the years because wages in many sectors of the economy remain so low, the relative cost of hiring workers is less than elsewhere. You may find a job here and think the salary you are earning is ridiculous.

Thank you for all your replys, Yes I agree Melvin, but where I am coming from Utah is actually paying more, the jobs have decreased in michigan as the wages have been cut in half.

Thank you

You would hate Utah. Everyone is rude and violent, the best jobs only pay .10 an hour and you have to join polygamist fundamentalist cult who swears an oath to serve satan to even get a drivers license. Nothing grows here (there isn't any dirt or rocks) and if you breath the air you die.

You'd best move on to Oregon.

Well, it kinda goes back to a story about the mountain man Jim Bridger and the first mormon pioneers. Ol' Jim took great pains to try to convice Brigham Young to stay out of the Salt Lake valley. Bridger pretty much said it was a desert wasetland and told Brigham he would pay 5,000 for the first bushell of corn grown in the valley. Bridger then told the mormons it would be best if the kept going and settled in Oregon. The Mormons later used the incident to bragg about how amazing it was that they build such a successful community.

I think Bridger was actually trying bumsteer the pioneers so they wouldn't destroy the place by settling in it. Lots of mountain men described the Salt Lake area as the most wonderful place on earth. Jed Smith called the valley his "home in the mountains".
