I will be visiting San Antonio in July with a mind to maybe relocate in a few years. I am a teacher and I see there is a new pre-k initiative. I was wondering what the people think and if it might affect other teaching jobs.

These two threads should shine some light on the popularity of Pre-K here..

Public Townhall regarding pre-K proposal to be broadcast on sunday, Sept 23, 8:00 PM

Ugh. It was sold to the public as some great program, but reality is that there's really no program. It was a tax hike with a name attached to it to tug on people's heart strings, so they could say you hated kids if you didn't vote for it. Unfortunately, a lot of the population didn't know what they were voting for.

I think for your purposes thinking about jobs, it means that there is more demand for early childhood education teachers.

Whether you get hired at a Pre-k 4 SA school, or at another school to replace someone hired at Pre K 4 SA, jobs should be in demand versus before the initiative was passed.

They are also paying somewhat higher salaries for the best teachers, so that may put upward pressure on salaries.

My mom is a teacher and has told me that the teachers that will work under this specific program start out at a higher salary than what is normally expected at the public schools. It is just too bad that they can't figure out how to fund getting the students to the education centers in the first place. It is really bad that it even passed in the first place.

Please, no more threads about Pfree-K. The ones who mostly voted for it, will get to use it. There is nothing taught in pre-school that a loving, available parent can't teach.
The salaries are way out of line...unless you want to be sure ALL pre-school teachers get paid that much. I used to be one and the pay IS pathetic, but try getting one center/school in this town to match $60,000.00 a yr. Some college instructors don't make that.

Wonder what will be the result of this as far as teachers in the regular k-12 public school system? I mean, I can imagine what I would do if I was a kinder or 1st grade teacher making 45k a year and then this was the new option...

OTOH, who knows how long this will last? There is a surplus of teachers in many districts, and if you leave, it can be very hard to get rehired.
