The Mexican Manhattan is still open on Soledad Street. I think the posts here are regarding the Manhattan, which was on Houston Street and has been closed for a long time.

Woolworth, Kress, Penner's, and La Feria come to mind. My mother and grandmother would go shopping downtown. My father would drop and pick them up at the main post office.

I know it wasn't a store but what was/is that triangular shaped building across the Alamo?

It was a Pizza Hut for a long time. I think it's a tourist amusement center like a hall of mirrors now.

HL Green had a counter with stools that spun where you could sit and order. They also had booths. The store part had wood floors. And you could go downstairs. Lots of places were bomb shelters too and they had the black and yellow signs as you walked down to the lower part of the store. All places were a welcome refuge from the heat as you waited for a bus that would eventually show up packed with people.
