Hopefully you can get your central heating fixed soon.

I think space heaters are fine if they're used like they're supposed to be.

Keep them away from flammable material (drapes, etc).
Make sure the power cord is in good condition.
Supervise young children. If they are old enough explain to them the dangers.
Personally I wouldn't leave one on unless I was in the room.

Those synthetic store-branded firelogs that HEB sells throw off a lot of heat.

Seen a lot of chimney fires this year. Three in my neighborhood alone. I'm sure a lot of folks don't clean their chimneys, which is a huge hazard. But keep in mind a lot of the older homes used the metal chimney piping inside their rock and masonry, but in old houses, those can degrade and rust out, especially if you have water penetrating your chimney. Then you've got a hole in your chimney and it's a superhighway for heat into your walls. Unless you've had your chimney inspected, or your house is fairly new, I'd triple check before lighting that thing.

Home Depot and Lowe's sell the heaters that are supposed to look like fireplaces. They don't but they do give off good heat and are sturdy and safe

Edit. My x pointed out that sex is a good way to keep warm to. There is always a spike in the baby population 9 months after a hard winter

we don't even have a fireplace. This is our second house in San Antonio and while both newer homes there is no fireplace. Only time I've ever lived anywhere without them.

Candles can help a little if you burn enough in the same area, just be careful!

Go to a sporting goods store, they have liquid-fuel heaters that'll work. Just be SURE you crack a window to ensure you have enough oxygen for you AND the fire! They have several models - I use a catalytic-style heater - little safer than the open-flame style.
