The express-news is reporting that booksamillion is interested in taking over the quarry location. They are specifically NOT wanting the forum and hubner oaks where the liquidation sales will be ongoing.

When the BookStop just outside the Alamo Heights City Limits in Sunset Ridge closed down several years ago, there was an outcry from area residents, but it was also noted that the nice and newer Borders in the nearby Quarry Marketplace could easily fill the void left by the departure of that BookStop. Now Borders is going away.

That wouldn't surprise me. The Quarry is a prime location in an affluent neighborhood, that would otherwise be left without a major brick & mortar bookstore.

Yes. I appreciate that those stores are selling books. However, one problem with people shopping there is that some customers might prefer books that are not on the bestseller lists, which is mostly what they sell. I personally don't have a problem because that would tend to be what I bought mostly anyway. But for other customers, it will not be good for traditional bookstores to close and have their options limited.

agree -- have never bought a book a walmart or target...unless you are interested in some silly romance novel or more Twilight-like teen books, their selection is horrible. I'll miss Borders.

Booksamillion on 1604 and Culebra isn't a bad store.

WalMart and Target really don't have any depth - mostly pop stuff.

I'm sad that Borders is closing as they have been my favorite book store for years, however, I can't say no to a great sale. So, has anyone been to the going out of business sale at borders yet. If so, how were the bargains. I know the prices will get lower as the weeks go on, but I want to go while they still have a decent selection of books.

Along with all the ne'erdowells that are attracted to bookstores today. I would gladly take that again over any of the Borders type places.

Unfortunately, I feel like digital books have dealt a major blow to bookstores. I have no plans of ever using a Kindle or other device. But they seem kind of convenient. However, there are many people who don't like the devices, so there is still some kind of market out there for paper books.
Wasn't there a Book Stop in the Collanade in the late 80s near where the Egg & I is? I know there was a bookstore there I just cannot for the life of me what the name was. There was little ramp that led to the kids section that I adored. Your comment about Book Stop (if that was indeed the name) brought back some memories!

I really do hope that something goes in where the Borders is at the Quarry. There really isn't a family oriented store near the theater where families can go after movies aside from Amy's. The last time I was there with a friend it was crazy how many families were in there just wandering.

to think that target/walmart/whatever other catchall store would be able to pick of the slack of a proper books store is quite laughable.

how is that books a million on 1604@culebra doing? i always stop in and get something when i'm in that shopping center, but i haven't needed to go there for months.

I wouldn't wait very long. Went today to use up an old gift card and it was pretty much armageddon. Books, puzzles, games were all thrown on top of one another. Looked like a bomb went off and the line to cash out was around the store. Sales weren't that great AT ALL, but by the time they actually mark everything down 40 percent, the only books left will be things like "The History of Pickles" or "Justin Bieber Explains the Global Financial Crisis."

I heard on the news that e-book sales only account for 11% of the market, so they probably weren't the cause of Borders shutting down.

Quote:
At this point, e-books still account for less than ten percent of overall book sales (8.7% of dollar value in January), but we've seen this same analog to digital scenario play out with music, cameras and movies. Digital is the future and e-readers are no longer on the bleeding edge, they're hitting the mainstream.
The E-Book Sees Market Share Increase, E-Book Sales Up 115%
