My son is having the most difficult time finding a job for this summer. He turns 16 in Aug, and none of the businesses we have approached (Sea World, Bill Miller, McDonalds, HEB, Sonic, Dominoes, etc) will hire anyone less than 16. Unfortunately, he'll spend June and July as a 15-yr old

The Federal child labor laws make it very difficult for businesses to employ kids under 16.

I'm in the same boat with a daughter who is 15 and a laundry list of things she thinks mom needs to buy her.
I did some research awhile back, and unless I'm misunderstanding and misinterpretting the laws, people as young as 14 CAN work some occupations, but I guess for liability purposes (???) many businesses choose to set the age of 16 for hiring (???).

What about those annoying door-flyer hangers? The House of Pizza near my house is always hiring for that, and I can't imagine that a 15 year old would not qualify.

Yes. The OP said other than lawnwork. But what's wrong with lawnwork? These kids are charging 40 buck for a regular-sized yard. That's 40 dollars an hour - a lot better than minimum wage. He'll get exercise and learn entrepaneurship (sp?)
Also, lots of places will let him volunteer. I know he won't be making any money but he will learn something and stay physically and/or intellectually challenged throughout the summer. All the animal shelters in town need help.
When I was about 9 years old - old enough to walk around the neighborhood by myself, I used to pick up coke bottles and take them to the plant to get the deposit money. When I was 12 and old enough to operate a lawnmower, I mowed the neighbor's lawn. From ages 13-15, I picked peaches. We got paid 10 - 30 cents a bucket depending or what orchid we worked. I sometimes made 30 dollars in one day - quite a bit for a 13 year old back in the late 70s.
Then when I was 16 and "legal" I went to work at a Dairy Queen.
So maybe your son could pick up alumin or work at a farm - picking peaches or watermelon, milk cows etc.. If any friends of the family are handy people, perhaps they could hire him as a helper. Or maybe there are some day-labor opportunities around?
