Where as in Austin or Dallas seem to be physically fitter/more health conscious cities. I can't comment on Houston because I've only been there a few times. Don't misconstrue this as being malicous, I am just pondering, but it would be interesting to see a poll on that. I know people have their own opinions but I have never grasped why people think this city is so great. Perhaps if I were a different race & size I might like it. That is MY opinion.
I'm not really sure I can see a correlation between the two, but I can answer your question about Houston. Houston regularly competes for that #1 obese spot with San Antonio. Dallas has been on the top 10 as well. Austin's the only one that has that feel to it, but that's not a coincidence. The other three cities easily bought into the notion of freeways and cars, while Austin has shot down more freeway projects, essentially requiring a more dense population... until you include the suburbs.

I didn't say I thought it was "so great," I simply said I preferred it in spite of its flaws over cities I am "supposed" to like. That preference comes from having family here, not having long commutes (I spent 2.5 hours commuting in Houston), the easier ability to avoid pretentious elitists I have encountered elsewhere, and because I never liked bars, clubs, etc. even when I was single, and I've never enjoyed being around college students.

I readily acknowledge the obesity and education problem. I'm from a school of thought that says if you have a problem with something, fix it, and leaving because of those types of problems only contributes to the problem. But I had that same observation in Houston, and when presented with the option of improving a place I spent most of my life in over a place I already hated, I chose the former.

I weigh in at a whopping 143 lbs and love it here a lot more than the fakeness in SoCal.
