Hi Everyone,

I am in my late 20s and I'm relocating to San Antonio. I've heard that the Strip (north of downtown) houses a concentration of clubs and bars catering to the LGBT community located on Main Street near San Antonio College. They include Sparky's Pub, Luther's Café, The Silver Dollar Saloon, Pegasus, and HEAT. A block from The Strip are The Saint and Essence.

What are the best places to live so that I can be in walking distance of the Strip?

I will most likely have 1-2 roommates as well.

I'm looking to pay around 300-400/month and if I end up having roommates, we would potentially be able to pay 900-1200/month for a 3 bedroom possibly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In general, what is the "scene" like in San Antonio? Is there a decent sized gay community?

Please let me know, no judgements please!

The rent you're looking for is on the cheap side, so you'll probably not find anything in Monte Vista, which is to the immediate north, but it wouldn't hurt to try anyway. Look in the Tobin Hill area, which is just east and is blowing up fast. Then check Five Points, which is just west, is gentrifying more slowly and will be cheapest.

The Strip where you already heard and talked about is your best bet, there really isn't any other area

My advice is to rent in one of those huge homes divided into rental units...are they called quadplexes?

Plenty of these south and east of SAC.

I agree with spoiler. I would try and still check out the Monte Vista area, because alot of those "apartments" are owned privately, so you might be able to score a deal.

Southtown, South Flores Warehouse District, Tobin Hill, Pearl, Lower Broadway are the areas you should concentrate on. Plenty of rental units in those areas and very urban and vibrant areas.

For affordability purposes, i would aslo agree with Tobin Hill. If you frequent the bars, it's within walking distance. The other areas are also a short cab ride away. From what I hear, the gay scene has improved greatly in the last five hears. They have cleaned up the strip quite a bit since then, and it is continuing to develop. The city's elimination of indoor smoking didn't hurt either. For a city its size, the gay community is pretty small but close knit. Among gay men, there are a lot of hispanic/anglo couples. The lesbian community seems more segregated.

One of my major issues with the gay bars here is that majority (on the strip) are owned by the same group therefore the motivation to improve them is seriously lacking.

I haven't been to the gay bars in years but if I *had* to go, I would go to bonham exhcange over the strip any time.

I am glad that indoor smoking got banned.

The Bonham is also the "least' gay of the gay clubs. The club has multiple room, and more straight go to this club then the others
