Hi all! I was wondering if anyone knew of a place, preferably a butcher shop, where I can get Chipped Beef or Dried Beef. As the granddaughter of a Navy Vet SOS was a staple in our house, especially around the holidays. Since we moved to SA from the Northeast I haven't been able to find Chipped Beef like I could up there. I would rather not use the vacuum packed ones you see in the grocery store. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Haven't seen it, but you might want to ask at someplace like Bolner's Meat Market, or Dziuk's in Castroville. To tell the truth I've never had SOS that wasn't made from Armor Dried Beef.

It's still around in grocery stores, HEB and Walmart - look around SPAM and other canned meats. I make SOS about once month over toast and boiled potatoes.

Kinda one of those "comfort foods" I totally forgot about...my mom would make it when it was rainy and cold for dinner...stuck to your ribs and on toast soooooo good. Never tried it on potatoes, gotta try that one for sure!

Try the Culebra meat markets or the Michicon ? meat markets, ask for "Carne Seca" dried beef it's not smoked and peppered like the Jerky you find at other meat markets. The dried beef they sell at these markets is more pliable and used to make "Macecado" ? reconstituted dried beef scrambled with onions and eggs.
