What's up with kids selling bottled water at intersections throughout the City?
Yesterday at CULEBRA and the 1604 access road I saw a near-miss by a quick-acting motorist when a small child (looked to be 5 or 6 years old) darted out into traffic to deliver a bottle of water! Is a buck that important?
Beyond my comprehensiveness as to why a parent/adult would believe it is safe for a child under 12 years old to be dashing in/out of traffic for a buck. Is there a permit required by CoSA for this selling activity?

Not to mention that the parents are teaching their kids that it's ok to beg for money instead of working an honest job. Whatever happened to car washes to raise money?!?

There is a permit that should be purchased to do this. There should also be reflective gear worn by everyone participating. Police do check the permits. Maybe that's where things are getting lost. The police just let it go. Ahh. A little searching and I found the answer. http://www.city-data.com/forum/9450386-post2.html

If they are selling water for $1, how is that begging?

Why cant these groups of kids setup in front of a store like the Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts normally do? Seems like a safer alternative. I see these people every weekend on Culebra and Potranco.

It happens all over the far-westside... and like so many issues, it's just another parenting problem. I would NEVER have allowed my children to peddle anything at intersections.

I agree this should be banned. I refuse to give money to any of these groups. Yesterday they were at 1604/Bandera also. My wife was reaching for a dollar and I told her to put it back. I would never let my daughter fund raise like that. All it takes is one driver to be distracted and swerve into the group.

Ban that and newspapers being sold. No one should be using our thoroughfares as a market. This isn't the third world.

A ban won't happen. This city bends over backwards "for the children."

The Express-News has a Federal Court ruling that says they can hawk papers on the street. Neither the city nor the state can legislate that away.

Got a link or anything for that? I know it's allowed per the city code (the above link was to my earlier post) but I have never heard about a Federal Court ruling being the source of it...
