Has anyone else had this happen and if so, how much to top it off (medium sized a/c unit for 1700 square foot home)?

Any recommendations on a company or "friend" that can do this for me?

Thanks!

Adding freon won't be cheap. You might want to read this... Is it legal to add freon to a leaking air conditioner

For repair work I use Michael Jones A/C. He's a small guy that works out of his house. Been working for me for about 20 years now. He's going to fix it right or don't bother calling him cause that's how he works. He's been more than reasonable over the years. 675-3729

How do you know your system is out of freon?

It might be a couple things besides your unit being out of freon like the drain being clogged, blown capacitor, etc. To recharge your system you'll be looking at $40 to $50 a pound plus the service call. I'll message a number, once I dig it up, of a guy that fixed my unit back in July and it had nothing to do with my unit being out of freon. I thought his price was fair and it was cheaper than calling the bigger companies.

You will be very lucky to find freon for $40 a pound. If you do jump on it. Freon has doubled and even tripled in some areas. It's probably closer to $75 a pound here. The R-22 prices skyrocketed once it's EOL date of 2020 was announced.

The person that worked on my ac charges $45 for a pound of freon, he was here right before the 4th of July. The big companies are the ones charging $75. After it was all said and done I paid $90, service call $45 and $45 for 1 pound of freon. Anywhere else it would've been over $120 so of course I jumped on it.

I purposely left out some details. My system ran out of freon last year and a family friend (A/C repair) told me that he had just stocked up on a bunch of freon because he said the price was doubling.

He only charged my $140.00 to come out and recharge the system. He said it was bone dry. A friend of mine thought that he charged me too much. I was just testing the waters to see if this was true. He is really giving me a great deal.

Thanks for the responses.
