Hey guys,

Im moving to San Antonio in August and am looking to rent a town home or duplex near Lackland AFB. (where ill be working) I know NOTHING about San Antonio, so I am trying to do my homework. I really would like to keep my commute to less than 25-20 minutes. I m looking for somewhere safe and close to other amenities. What areas should I be looking at?

I think there are some townhomes on Marbach near 410, but I wouldn't want to live in that area. The area is a bit rundown and can be a bit iffy with its crime/drugs/violence etc. A large number of townhomes are in the Medical Center which would give you about a 20 minute commute to Lackland. You will, for the most part, be going against traffic if you come from that direction.

Thanks. Yeah, I definitely want to stay away from the "iffy" areas. Where exactly is the Medical Center Area?

Medical center is zip code 78229 on the map. There are some "iffy" areas in medical center too but not so bad I wouldn't consider living here. It is where I live right now.

When I lived in the medical center area, there was constant noise from sirens and helicopters, and my car got broken into every few months. I guess it comes down to personal preference, but I was really happy when my husband quit working in the medical center and we had a reason to move to a different part of town. I lived there about 13 years ago so maybe it's changed a lot, but we used to see people fighting in the grocery store and things like that.

I live near Lackland now, in 78245. There aren't any apartments or duplexes I've seen around here, but lots of houses for rent. A lot of my neighbors are military, or civilians who work at Lackland. There are also nice apartments off of Highway 151.

I do agree that you should avoid the townhomes on Marbach. Marbach and 410 is one of those iffy areas.

A lot of Lackland personnel live in 78251 (Potranco) and 78253 (Westcreek area) and further north in Alamo Ranch. There are several apartment and townhouse complexes with more going up along the 151 corridor. Pretty much a straight shot to Lackland. Sorry I can't make any recommendations on specific places.

You do not want to live near Lackland itself, it suffers from the same type of neighborhood you find around any large base - lots of payday loan, high interest auto sales, pawn shops, and low income neighborhoods with all of the accompanying "features".

Also add in 78240 as Glen Heather is in that area and is townhomes.

I may have just become desensitized to the sirens since I grew up on the outskirts of the Medical Center, but living here now it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was. There are break-ins, but that is everywhere. I have not had any problems at my complex in the Medical Center

I haven't heard good things about the Westcreek Townhomes. I even think there was some crap talked about them on the forum. Traffic will be a nightmare in that area and the newer apartments are very pricey for what they are.

The Medical Center sounds like the hood.lol Im good on that...I would like to be somewhere fairly quite and nice.

Yeah, its seems like West and North West San Antonio has either apartments or homes. There doesnt seem to be many town homes available. I may just look into renting a house. Thanks!
