HEB as a grocery store is top notch (Central Market kicks butt) but as for HEB Plus!, it's a grocery store that sells almost everything else like a Super Target and Walmart Supercenter.

In that regards, Super Target is better (ie. everything other than groceries is better compared to HEB Plus!)

I try to avoid Walmart like the plague because it's such a nut house and I can't handle it sometimes. I use certain products and have not been able to find those products at any of the stores here and I've been to Target also. So I have "my people" in CA send me the products I need and when I run out I send them money and they send me more stuff. I don't have a problem with HEB, in fact I think it's a nice store, I just liked having more choices in CA. I guess you could say I'm a little bit homesick!
We have Whole Foods here, and also Sun Harvest. I haven't shopped at Whole Foods, but Sun Harvest is nice. A little pricey, maybe, but they have a lot of organic foods. Their meat is pretty good, too. Also, Central Market has tons of specialty items.

Sun Harvest, Central Market are great. There's also Super Target. And in some areas of town Handy Andy, La Fiesta and Save A'lot.

I have to agree with Twinkle, I miss the variety of grocery stores. What you couldn't find at one you could get at the other. Now if I can't find it at HEB I'm SOL. Super Target has some but it's not really a grocery store. Mind you I'm not moving back to CA but it'd be nice to have a bit of variety. Whole Paycheck is nice but terribly expensive. Now open up a Trader Joe's out here and I'd be thrilled.

The thing is, SA used to have lots of other grocery stores.

Krogers, Albertson's, etc. But HEB murder them in terms of competition.

Just wondering, what are some of the stuff you can't find?

Also from experience if you can not find the brand that you think (say a certain type of hot dog or beans or whatever) if you talk tothe manager on duty they can put in an order for you to see if they can even get it. I have lived many places that had lots of different types of grocery stores and HEB would put them in there place if they were in that market! AS far as Super Targets go the one on 1604 and Bandera seems like a grocery store to me.

Mrs. Cubbins stuffing, couldn't find it anywhere. Actually all I could find was Stove Top at HEB, Target and WalMart. It could just be the fact that it was a week before turkey day but I went in 2 days and the day before turkey day and still only found Stove Top. There are other brands out there, I know it! Also HEB doesn't carry canned pumpkin on a regular basis and I don't even know if they had it this holiday. Not pumpkin pie mix, just canned pumpkin. For those of us who own dogs it's kinda what you go to when the dog needs some pepto bismol. You can use pepto too but you and the walls end up pink since the stuff tastes horrid. Canned pumpkin is much easier.
That being said the people who work there are super nice and helpful. Still monopolies do have their drawbacks...

I miss Albertsons - I miss Kroger - I would like a Bakers -
I go so far out of my way to buy veggies, and go to meat markets, ANYTHING to avoid HEB.. I feel like I am being punished for living in San Antonio.. And some people just don't see a problem with - having no real choice - when they shop. Its like being stuck with poopoo icecream for the rest of your life.. If thats all that is in your town, thats all that you get.. too bad, so sad.. Gee thanks HEB. Thanks for being poopoo icecream

Why don't you go to Handy Andy's or Sun Harvest?
