Sammy's - right there on the main drag. Try their chicken-fried steak! You're also right down the road from Hondo - the Herman Sons steak house is worth the trip!! Alsatian Bakery right across from Sammy's for tasty pastries!

To add to the poster above, Kora's has a great burger.

Not a lot of variety in Castroville. The Coras 471 is great and depending on the night, has live music. I'm partial to the chicken fried steak and burgers. Coras is about 4 miles north on 471. The trip to Hondo for Hermann Sons is well worth the short drive. I've never had anything bad there and we commonly will drive from SA to Hondo for lunch. I would suggest asking for a table at the windows. You'll know why after you're seated. There are other small eateries in Castroville. If you like a sandwich or grossly over priced food that isn't worth the trouble, that is. There's also Bill Millers Bar-B-Q on the corner of 471 and 90 along with a Bushs Fried Chicken close to the new Walmart. You'll find a Tink-A-Taco on 90 that's reasonably decent but nothing to write home about. Sammys over the years has pretty much turned into a poor Dennys. I'm not a fan of generic food. If you like a quick burger, there' the Dairy Queen on the westside of town. Of all of them, Coras 471 and Hermann Sons are worth the effort. The rest are just stomach fill.

I second Cora's. Their nachos are killer in my opinion.

I grew up between Hondo and Castroville as a kid so I spent many many weekends eating at Herman Son's or Sammy's...so here is my opinion on both.

Sammy's....never liked it....I find it to be rather nasty in fact. There isn't a single dish I liked there. Avoid the Mexican dishes there especially...they just dump canned chili on their enchiladas. At least they use Haby's bread from across the street.

Herman Son's WAS the place to go....and I still enjoy their hamburger steaks but nothing else. The owner is a longtime family friend of my family but I have not personally spoken to him for awhile.

If you are willing to venture a bit further out...Bill and Rosa's in D'hanis is worth checking out. I personally find them to be better than Herman Son's.

I forgot to mention Castroville Café is worth checking out also. I have only eaten there maybe 3 times total but enjoyed it every time.

Rep’d you for that Shan. Thank you! We were about to go to Sammy’s despite the bad reviews because that was the only thing still open until I saw your post. We went there instead and we are so glad we did. The pulled pork nachos were awesome and huge. We barely made a dent in them before we had them boxed up. We had to make room for the really good pizza. If we are ever back here again this place is a must!
