I need an Automatic Garage Door Opener installed.
The last time I had one done was about 20 years ago,.... I purchased it from Sears and from what I remember, they installed it. Don't know if they still do that.

I know Home Depot and Lowes sells them but I am not sure about the installation part. Maybe they contract the labor out to someone for installation.
If that be the case,.... would it be better or less expensive if I purchase the equipment and hire someone myself to install such as a Handyman or Porch.com
Or would it be better to contact a company that specializes in Garage Doors for repairs etc.
I'm thinking they may charge more. (They seem to be pretty pricey)

Recommendations would be appreciated. Especially from someone who has recently purchased one.
TIA

.

Check with Sears, HD and Lowe's. Go with whichever one does the entire system at the best price. That way, you're not going to get into a "blame game" if something doesn't work.

+1 for overhead door company. They did the original opener and door on my house in ‘67. When I bought the house 10 years ago it was all still working. I recently replaced the old wooden door through them because the springs were shot and I just decided to replace everything. The opener still works. They were the cheapest for the oversized door that we have, had it in stock and replaced every little thing for about $200-$400 less than everyone else. I wanna say the install shouldn’t be any more than $150.

A garage door installed 50 years ago still in use today isn't all that unusual; but an opener? Those things were pretty rare back then, and primitive by today's standards. Plus, they provided poor security and safety; but would have been considered a pretty high-end item back in '67. And was still operational until recently? Amazing!

I can only imagine what the remote control looked like! You probably couldn't get a replacement remote for something that old today.

My house built in 1956 still has original wood Overhead garage doors but the opener seems newer (same brand label on it).

It actually does still work I just haven’t hooked it back up. They wouldn’t do it because it was old and doesn’t have any safety features in place and of course no rolling codes. I literally just need to hook it up to the door. It was the springs that were shot so the opener would no longer open the door. I was going to just have the springs replaced but figured I might as well do the door because the wooden one was starting to rot at the bottom. I actually got a nicer door that’s an upgrade anywhere else and some decorative hardware for waaay less than HD or sears or any of the other garage door places. One skinny kid came out on a rainy Saturday and it it all replaced in a couple of hours. I have the remote still somewhere but it’s in pieces. If I hook it back up I think I’ll disable the remote capabilities so no one can open it. I almost want to keep it because it’s pretty damn cool to have something that old still working.

My last one was with Sears and we did the install through them as well. It was a belt opener and it also comes with an extra thing (don't know what it is called) but you can hook it up to your wireless and download an app to your home and you can get notifications if you garage door is opened and you can also open and close it from the app as well.
