Can you live without a car in San Antonio? Is san Antonio a city with access to public transportation such as trains and buses?

I wouldn't recommend it.

San Antonio is spread-out & car-dependent. There are no commuter trains here, nor high-speed rail. There is bus service through VIA Transit, but I would recommend a residence near the intersection of major north-south & east-west arteries for best service, and preferably in the inner-city. If your destination would require a transfer to another bus route, a trip that might take a few minutes by car could take over an hour, especially if there is a layover between busses.

San Antonio does have ride-sharing service through Uber & Lyft, which might provide a reasonable supplement to bus transportation.

It depends on what part of the city you live/work in.

it's very hard unless you work downtown or live very near where you work. What takes 15 minutes to drive will take you two hours on the pus you're hostage to the bus schedule.

Many people do but it is not a city built for that type of environment. You could live at the Pearl or DT but you’d have to work in one those locations.

If you don't mind sharing the public transportation with a bunch of drug addicts. Otherwise, I would stick to Austin or get a car.

No trains. Maybe if we had one public transportation would be better/safer

Yes, it's certainly possible if you live within a 10 minute walk to work. You will be limited in your food options, but I guess that's what uber is for.
