At first glance, I thought what a travesty.

I then did a little research. Methinks , Lila Doth protest too much.

https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html

The above link shows what is required to vote

Here is a list of the acceptable forms of photo ID:

Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
United States Passport (book or card)

Being over 70, Ms Cockrell could have presented an expired form of any of the above.

Texas Driver License
United States Passport

would have worked.

Alternatively, the below could have been exercised:

copy of or original current utility bill;
copy of or original bank statement;
copy of or original government check;
copy of or original paycheck; or

After presenting one of the forms of supporting ID listed above, the voter must execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration.

AND SHE COULD HAVE VOTED.

The former mayor was either looking for a photo op or is perhaps losing her mental facilities.

Seems like most of the protesting isn't done by her, but others mentioned in the article.

From the story:

"Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety also went to her Terrell Heights condo Thursday to help her submit paperwork for a DPS-issued ID."

Do they do that for everyone, I wonder? I've never heard of them making house calls but maybe I just missed it.

Sorry she couldn't vote the first time there, but seriously, how did she not know the rules?

I just find it interesting that the others just "happened" to be in attendance when she showed up to vote.

If the 97 year old former mayor (understandably) no longer drives, and consequently no longer has a driver's license, then I guess someone gave her a ride to the polling place? Unless it is just a short walk from her condo. If she got a ride to the polling place, couldn't she have gotten a ride to a DPS office to get a Texas ID card? only $6 for someone over age 60, and it also has no expiration for someone that age.

Maybe it would have been easier if she had requested a mail-in ballot, which she would be entitled to at her age.

But none of those reasonable solutions would have made her the victim certain parties are looking for......

Yeah, it is odd how it all played out. I am all for the voter ID law. It is not hard to get one of the many options allowed for ID purposes.

Jeez, I called TDPS a few weeks ago and tried to talk to a real person. I tried and tried but they really don't want to talk to you directly.

"Leave a message" What BS !

Because for most of her life, you could vote with just your voter registration card. Is it really so shocking that a 97-year-old woman would be unaware of or would forget the change? She did have her voter reg card.

The rule almost did have its intended effect of blocking a Democratic vote. Sorry guys, better luck next time.

There have been several elections since the new rule came
into effect.

Did she not vote in the General Election?

This was a runoff.
