It is generally only a thing on sports teams or when people join greek life in college. If it is not out of hand or too far I am not against it. Making a kid drink so much that he passes out and has to go to the hospital, or making the kids put something in their butt is too far.

With due respect….hazing by definition is activity that is, to use your words, out of hand. I don’t think anyone reasonable would be offended by harmless initiation rituals like making pledges of fraternities clean up after dinner and parties, or requiring pledges to show up to all fraternity intramural basketball games with a date (and if you don’t have a date, you have to bring two dates to the next game), etc. But physical and psychological abuse should never be acceptable.

Meh, it depends on what it is. Kids that join fraternities know exactly what they are signing up for. Football is sort of different, I will give you that.

I don’t think the the 2 kids in my freshman dorm that died during a hazing incident in their 3rd week of college didn’t know what they were signing up for. Meh not.

That would be an example of it being taken too far. I guarantee they knew there was hazing going on. You would have to be pretty stupid or incredibly naive not too.
