We are moving in Alamo Ranch in about 3 weeks. Can someone give me any info on Zachry Middle School. I hear both good and bad about this school. Had we not moved my child would be attending Vale which I've heard lots of good things about the principal at Vale.

My son went there for a few months and I was not happy with it at all. It's the only time I have had to go to the school to talk to the principal about something. The issue was the bus and how it was taking over 1 1/2 hours to get to and from school. When I would pick him up I notice the thug wannabe's too and wasn't impressed by them either.

I have subbed in that school several times. While you do have some tough kids there, I like the adminstration's approach. First of all, they wear uniforms, which I feel helps a lot. They are good about enforcing. Second of all, while they have a firm hand on discipline, they treat the students with more respect than some of the other places I have worked at. At those schools, I felt more like a prison warden, not just because of the student's behavior, but because of the staff's attitude toward them. I have refused to work at some places because of the environment, but I do not have a problem working at Zachry.

BTW, would you rather your child attend school with "wannabe thugs", or real ones?

Vale does indeed sound promising, but bear in mind that it takes time for things to get established in a new school, so the environment there is somewhat unknown at this time. A lot of the students there are being moved from their old school/friends, so it's hard to determine how they will act.

And rd2007, the bus issue has nothing to do with the school. That' s a matter for the transportation dept.

My daughter is attending Zachry this year. We were a little apprehensive about her attending this school but after meeting the principal, counselors and some of the teachers, we felt a little better. My wife knows a couple of the teachers and they say it is not as bad as some say. We'll see how it goes.

This Thursday they are having a student orientation session at 6pm.

"Wannabe thugs" can be a bit more dangerous, since they may feel the need to "prove" themselves. Thugs have already made that point clear and everyone knows it.

and the transportation to the school is obviously a school issue..
It appears the school has changed for the better and uniforms are definitely a plus.

My daughter went there last year for the first time. She had no problems all year. Her grades were good, not great. Overall, no major issues with the school. We were ingaged with all of her teachers and they were all pretty good.

I'm confused. How could Vale be a better school when this year is the first year it'll be open?

(Not that I don't have high hopes for it, since two of my kids will be going there. It's just not a "proven" school yet.)
