We got a Nikon D90 for Christmas, and I am in need of a good photography class. We went to Wolf Camera to look at the cameras (they were actually cheaper online), and they are only offering classes for regular digital cameras, not SLRs. Plus you have to buy a camera AT their store, not online like we did. Ritz camera--same thing.

Looking for a class or even a private tutor to teach us how to use this camera to it fullest capability for a future hobbyist.

Does anyone know if the base teaches classes?

TIA!

You may want to check out NISD continuing education. Or maybe a photography meetup group? Or call a professional photographer. Maybe you can hire them for some lessons? There's been some threads here about local photographers that come highly recommened.

I'm jealous...I want an SLR

Here's NISD's offering:

Northside Independent School District, Adult and Community Education

Northwest Vista College also has a class:

Schedule: Class Listing for Spring 2009 @ Northwest Vista College (http://www.accd.edu/nvc/documents/springschedule/classlisting.htm - broken link)

NEISD's catalog isn't posted yet.

I'd love to take one of these classes, too, but I just have a digital.

I just bought the D60! I loved the 90, but a little $$$ for a newbie! Let me know if you find a class!

Camera Exchange (on San Pedro) gives classes, I think. Camerax.com.

are you trying to learn photography or learn how the camera works? the local schools will teach photography, but I doubt they will teach digital cameras at the D90 level. That's a pretty high end toy there.
I would recommend reading some photography fundamentals online and the manual that came with the camera for the technical side. If you have questions about words in the camera, Google them.
The main things to learn are the effects of shutter speed, ISO speed, and aperture size (F-Stop) on the final product. Then learn about leading lines, ambient lighting, fill flash, framing, and probably quite a few other things I'm forgetting. It also wouldn't hurt to read up on some famous photographers and look at their style. There's a lot that goes into creating a good picture, but once you learn some fundamentals, it isn't that difficult.

Oh, I was going to also mention, there is a book called Nikon D90 for Dummies. Those type of books always help when I'm trying to figure something out. they are very easy to read and understand. I hope that helps too!

If you REALLY want to learn photography, look into the classes at SAC. They have an excellent department. I minored in it years ago and started my classes there before transferring.

There are a ton of online resources for learning but the best tool is to just get off the full auto and start playing.

About the best for nikonites is thom hogan:

Thom Hogan's Nikon Field Guide and Nikon Flash Guide

Another great asset is a "a fast prime lens" (every system has a cheap fast 50mm, canon has one for $80). Fast primes are great in low light and a fabulous tool for teaching the relationship between aperature and depth of field.
