I doubt that we'll ever see FIOS in San Antonio, though.
And oddly enough U-verse added 100k more subs than fios did last quarter.

And is it is about freaking time that the phone company figured out how to do caller id on screen!

Probably more areas available with U-verse than FIOS due to the node issue.
Wonder what the stats look like where there's direct competition.

You mean where both FIOS and U-verse are available? Some upscale Dallas-area suburbs are the only areas I've heard of where both services are offered.

The reason I speculated in an earlier post that it is unlikely San Antonio will ever see FIOS is because AT&T already has a stronghold on the local market. Their U-verse operations are still headquartered here, and some San Antonio neighborhoods were among the first to be offered U-verse service.

That is probably part of it. I think at this point u-verse has passed 20m units, whereas fios has passed only around 16m units. Fios usually has over 200k new subs a quarter, but only got 150k last qtr. Their marketing dept must have been asleep.

We had our U-Verse install completed last Monday - so far so good. Everything seems to be running well.

I live about a mile from you in Westcreek and I just checked and it says our area does not have u-verse.

You won't see FIOS in San Antonio, nor in *MOST* places where you will see U-Verse.

That said, from my experience, I don't think FIOS blows U-Verse out of the water. It has the theoretical advantages of fiber to the home, but the set-top experience is much more "cable like" than u-verse, which has some more innovative features. You can get faster broadband with FIOS, but I think that is an overrated feature...most people don't use what they get with their dsl/cable/broadband provider today, it is just another proverbial d*** measuring contest.

FIOS and U-Verse both are contract companies--the city awards a non-compete contract and it depends on the infrastructure--Verizon/FIOS is not starting from scratch --but has to have some infrastructure already in place to make costs feasible...

I don't think there are any cities that offer BOTH U-verse and/or FIOS (and I am in DFW area)

There is a section in DFW that has AT&T as incumbent telco, but has had FIOS over build the area.

To your point, its not quite as simple as one can/one can't service in a given area, but it works that way in practice almost every time.
