We bought a family membership to the zoo on our first visit. For a family of 4, it was $65. I know it is less for 1 adult & 1 child. 3 visits would pay for the cost of the membership!

I was also going to suggest zoo membership - it is an awesome deal. yes its a bit up front, but if you could put away $5-$10 a week for it you could get the membership in just a couple months!

I was talking with a friend online, and was amazed to find out that in many parts of the county things like zoo admission, childrens museum admission, etc are free if you show proof of being on some type of assistance, i.e. food stamps, WIC, medicaid, workmans comp, etc.

She said where she is you can also check out a membership pass from the public library as well for free and use it to visit many of the same type of places.

Does anywhere in San Antonio do this? I'm a low income single mom and would love to take my 3 year old to the zoo and things like that, but just don't have the money to spend $15 at a time to go.

In most venues, Prices for adults already subsidize the ticket prices for those with children. Geez, how much more do you want from us?

We already do all those things {that we are able financially & time-wise} - I'm a stay at home single mom who works from home so that my daughter CAN have the quality time with me.

We have gone a few times to the zoo and she is asking to go back again, and frankly now that she has turned 3 I can't afford it {$18 just for the two of us} again. I am trying to give my daughter a well-rounded education similar to what a child in better circumstances would get - it's not her fault we are not a well off as others. Right now even the $1 menu at places it out as my business has not been doing as well, and so things are very tight. We use VIA to get around, which makes things even harder at times.
Dakota.....I'm sorry you're struggling so much. I was going to say that most of us have been through difficult times, but that really doesn't help your situation. It just sucks when it hits home. It sounds like you are giving your daughter everything she needs. Please don't be hard on yourself when times are challenging. If you are doing all those things that LovingSat listed, then I can promise you that your daughter is getting more "mom" time than a lot of well off kids. The most difficult part is not to allow yourself to become embittered by your current circumstances. Keep telling yourself you are in a temporary place right now and it won't always be like this. Your daughter will be a well rounded and resilient young woman one day. You'll look back and know you did your best.

Honestly....you asked for help and people are reaching out to you. From my point of view I saw nothing but kindness in those posts and a willingness to share. Best of luck to you.

This may not help much, since your little one is 3 and it's almost time for bed but in the month of September the Mayan theater on SW military is offering free movies after 7pm if you bring in canned goods...all for Hunger Awareness month. And that goes for everyone, not just "struggling mothers."
