I am looking for a hungarian restaurant, somewhere near San Antonio; if not in San Antonio, for a g/f.

I don't think there's a Hungarian restaurant here in San Antonio. Might be one in Austin or Houston.

The European Bistro (http://www.austin360.com/restaurants/restaurants/62819/DetailedList.jspd?activity=62819 - broken link) (111 E Main St, Pflugerville, TX 78660) claims to serve Hungarian, but it's north of Austin so it's a bit of a drive...

At this Hungarian restaurant founded five years ago in Pflugerville by sisters Anni Zovek and Piroska Althouser, the spotlight is on time-heavy, tradition-laden flavor emphasizing the cuisine of Hungary and that region of the world. Good choices include German potato dumpings, Uzbekistan-style samosas, sour cherry soup, cucumber salad, chicken paprikas and gulyas (made with beef tips)
I've never eaten there; however, the Austin Chronicle did a review of it here (but that's from 2003)...

Hope that helps!

Cheers! M2

Cool, I've been there several times back in the early 90s. We used to drive down from Bratislava to Budapest on a regular basis. It is a really cool country but to be honest I don't remember too much about the food; most of Eastern European fare is somewhat similar in nature.

Be sure to let us know what she thinks as well!

Cheers! M2

Will do MMMax, we (all of us that can cram into a car)need to make plans and be all at the same place for the same day to ride up there. She's all excited, so it will probably be sooner than later. Me, I've never had hungarian cuisine so it should be interesting.

Wow. I have relatives in Hungary, visited them all back in 1990. Cool language. Hungarian cuisine is famous for goulas (beef stew), they have great peppers there, there's a special fish from Lake Balaton called fogas. Keep us posted on your Hungarian g/f's adventures here...
