HEB not diverse?!?

Career Opportunities at H-E-B (http://www.heb.com/aboutHEB/careers-diversity.jsp - broken link)

Suppliers (http://www.heb.com/aboutHEB/supp.jsp - broken link)

About the only complaint I have with HEB is that their prices are a bit higher than Walmart or the commissary. Otherwise, I like their stores and selection...

What really upsets me about HEB is that their prices are not the same throughout the city -especially the produce. For example, I can buy avocados at HEB Marketplace at 3 for $1, while the same avocados are $0.69 at the store closer to my house. This difference in price led me to think that Marketplace always had lower produce prices, but that is not true either. I know some might think the difference is minimal, but it really does add up over the course of a year.

Have you ever seen HEB do price comparisons against Walmart (like they did in the old days against Albertson's, etc.)? IMO, HEB does the best job for food and Walmart does the best job for non-food items.

Looks like we're on the same page.

HEB may have done price comparisons against Albertson's, but my bill was always cheaper at Albertson's. I think that was mainly because Albertson's had better produce for a cheaper price.

The thing that irks me about HEB is that once Albertson's was gone, HEB reduced their selection of branded products like frozen vegetables. I'm also not pleased that they don't carry OB pasta (An excellent Texas brand). I'm guessing they are pretty ruthless about charging for shelf space. Their pricing varies wildly between locations.

I miss the quality and selection we had with Albertson's, but I also miss their french bread as well.

30 years ago we had around 6 major chains, two warehouse grocers and a smattering of independent grocers as well. Now were land-locked by the various incarnations of HEB.

You're not pronouncing it correctly. HEB stands for Henry E. Butte, the founder. For obvious reasons you can see why he did not name it after his last name.

no, I'm pronouncing it exactly the way I pronounce it and for that very reason too. I had a girl in a class once that kept getting mad at us for calling it heb instead of spelling out HEB, so we stuck to it

I worked with a girl who moved from NJ - she pronounced it, "HEEB." For the longest time I had no idea what she was talking about.

For the record, that would be Howard E. Butt, not Henry E. Butte. And it was originally C.C. Butt Grocery.

Walmart has the same variations in pricing. I was trying to find some ammo for a friend, and visited 4 different Walmarts to find enough. Pricing at all 4 was different on the same ammo. They price to the local market condition. Look at the disparity in gas prices at the Sam's pumps if you REALLY want a "HUH?!!?" moment!
