I bought this plasma Magnavox from Office Depot a few years ago, and wouldn't you know right after the warranty runs out, I'm watching the TV one day and this vertical line appears, it looked like a colorful waterfall at first and then turned black. It's been like this for several months, but I need to get it fixed.

Any one have any suggestions for some good TV repair shops, or how much it might cost me to fix this? The TV at the time cost me about $1,000 + the $200 warranty. Not sure how much I could sell it for like this, but don't want to spend a ton of money to fix it either. I've attached a pic here! Thanks!!

You are out of luck, plasma TVs are not worth fixing. I bought a plasma TV about 5 years ago when they were still very expensive...and about 2 years ago..it started having a variety of screen problems(one similar to yours). At the time to get it fixed it was about $500 and that wasnt guaranteed to solve the issue. So with large reputatable brand TV under $1,000 you are better off getting a new one. In addition LCD/LED being slightly more expensive, you will not experience the same screen problems as you would with a plasma.

On a side note, since then I have bought 3 TVs from beachcamera.com or butterflyphoto.com....all top rated internet sellers...and they have incredible prices...with free shipping and no sales tax.

I had something like it on my computer screen. It was the old CRTs and I would bang it on its side and it would stop. People thought it was hilarious that it worked like you would see in the movies but it tided me over for a bit until I could buy a flat screen.
I would try elnina's suggestion and go from there. Good luck!

If I were you I'd call Magnavox and ask to be escalated to a higher department (usually an Executive Customer Relations type of department).

Guess what? I have a "white dots" issue that JUST started to happen on my Samsung television about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

I FOUND out that even if I'm out of warranty, Samsung is still going to cover it (parts, labor and everything) as it is a defect in the television DLP chip!

I knew my TV was out of warranty; I googled "white dots samsung DLP" and it was there that I found out about this problem that Samsung is fully covering. Had I not googled it, I would have never known it was a defect Samsung was willing to cover in full.

So, you should at least try to persuade Magnavox to cover it. If you are escalated higher up, you might reach someone who will authorize it. Tell them how much you love Magnavox (and of course, be VERY friendly and nice!) and read this link below for tips on how to complain the right way.

"A Guide to Complaints That Get Results," : http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/23/yo...23haggler.html

As a sidenote: I was also able to get a 6.00 credit on Ebay today by including my email conversation with a buyer that I had in Spanish (and I'm not even fluent in Spanish) so that Ebay could see I attempted to make the situation right.

Goodluck!

Thanks for the advice y'all. I did try calling Magnavox once, it was a pain in the rear and they weren't very friendly. I'll try again.

I found a forum that talks about fixing this issue by opening the TV and locating the red cables for the section that is having the issue, and using a soldering iron to fix it. Apparently it's worked for a lot of people and has saved them a lot of money. I'm going to try it within the next week. If it works I'll let you know!!

Cool, goodluck on trying to fix it yourself.

Yes, calling the manufacturer is no fun at all. However, IF you can prove that it's a defect of some kind (I don't know if it is), you'll have a better chance of working out something with Magnavox.

If all else fails, I would file a report online with the BBB and document your complaint in full through their online system.

The BBB can scare businesses as their reputation is on the line and they are usually willing to work with you in some way.

Earlier this year, I received a free year of service of LogMein.com's remote control services (60.00 value) by complaining to the BBB about their system issues which affected my ability to use their services on my computer for months.

Goodluck!
