I currently live a mile from the beach, but having lived in the IE for 8 years, and going to Phoenix a few times per year it's around 15-20 degrees cooler which is a big difference. It also cools off at night so you get a break from the heat when the sun goes down. Also, Phoenix gets hotter much earlier in season than the IE and really only has nice weather from Nov - Feb/Mar IMO. If 85 feels hot to you I would not recommend it but otherwise it's definitely more tolerable than the desert.

I've live in Alta Loma (western part of Rancho Cucamonga) for the past 2 years after moving from
the San Gabriel Valley part of Los Angeles area. Last year my guess is that we had about 20-25 days
during the summer where it was in the 90-100 range. Out of those, maybe 3-4 days felt like they were in the 99-101 range.
