We are in Dallas, Texas. All three of our kids have ended up in Southern California. Two in Los Angeles and one in Palm Springs. We would like to retire somewhere sort of equa-distance from the two cities. As with most folks, money is a consideration. We would like to spend less than $3k monthly to rent for a year or so to make sure it's for us. Also, I substitute teach and would like to keep doing this.

Any thoughts on a safe, affordable city or area (55+ is OK) for us to consider?

First, here's my "Welcome to California!"

I'm glad you are considering this beautiful and truly amazing state.

My personal recommendations (no particular order):

1.) Eastvale
2.) Chino Hills / Chino
3.) Norco
4.) Upland
5.) Riverside
6.) Redlands / Calimesa
7.) Menifee
8.) Rancho Cucamonga
9.) Temecula
10.) Corona

That should give you a good jumping-off point, if nothing else?

One thing you didn’t mention is your home buying budget. I lived in So Cal for 60 years yet when I retired I left the state my kids and grandkids followed to get out of CA.

I know I am extremely fortunate and this is not your situation. But it’s difficult to give a “short list” of cities without knowing your budget.

So maybe give some numbers on that. I’ve lived in LA county, OC, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

We will be renting for at least the first year and don't really want to spend more than 3K a month. If we find it is just not for us, we don't want to have a house to sell.

apple92680 gave you a good list. Corona would be good as it is about midway and still within your budget. It would maybe be possible to go a bit further West, Like Fullerton as traffic to LA for family will be worse than to the drive to Palm Springs from a mid point location. Look at the actual drive times not just distance.
