I know this has been posted before but most of the replies were a couple years old. We are relocating from No. California and are looking at Encinitas and Carlsbad because we like the smaller school size and the fact that elementary schools go though 6th (we will have a 6th grader starting in september and thought putting off middle school for one year might be easier for making friends) anyhow, my husband will be commuting to the exit after Sorrento Valley and we are wondering how bad the commute is these days from Encinitas, and is So. Carlsbad significantly longer or about the same. 30 minutes or so is doable but and hour each way is not....thanks

Encinitas: Plan on 30-45+ minutes
Carlsbad: Plan on 45-60+ minutes

The North County 5 commute is never going to get any better - only worse.

I think you will need to be very flexible re your commute because one day can vary from the other...I live in Encinitas and commute to UTC area. One day it can take me 30 minutes to drive home, other times an hour...there is no set pattern or rhyme or reason to it. One hour each way no matter where you live is not all that unusual.

If he has fairly set hours he could take the Coaster from either Carlsbad or Encinitas to Sorrento Valley and then maybe take a shuttle to his work place, if they have one.
