@earlyretirement: Carmel Valley really sounds like a nice place.

I'm reading another thread about paper think walls problem common in San Diego. Do you have any buildings or complex which have built sturdier, meaning I won't be able to keep an active conversation with neighborhoods through our shared walls? I really prefer quiet apartments. I'll definitely look for top floor units, but noise from same floor units could also be an issue.

Thanks again for very useful info!

I haven't had any problem with paper thin walls where I rented. I'm in a newer townhouse that was probably built in 2003 or so and I've been impressed that I've never once heard the neighbor. Fortunately I only had one neighbor as my unit was facing the street.

But I didn't have any problems hearing my neighbors. I'm sure other developments might be different but I've not experienced any problems with noise from neighbors.

Carmel Valley probably isn't for everyone but based on the information you provided, I think it could be a good fit for you. The only thing I'd recommend is to try to get a unit with a covered garage space.

One thing I've noticed is some of these town homes and apartment complexes have multiple cars in the family and they might only give you one covered space. Then they have limited amounts of uncovered spaces for the rest of the people living in the development.

Although you have to have a permit...they seem fairly easy to come by and the places can be totally filled. For example, our town house rental came with 1 garage space that will only fit 1 car. They gave a permit to hang from the mirror for my wife's car. Well, the problem is that unless she comes home before 4:30 PM all the spots will be filled! And on the weekends it's a nightmare. And in this part of Carmel Valley there isn't much space in the streets either. It's not uncommon to see cars literally waiting and waiting at the side for people to leave at night or on the weekend. One time, I came home late and there was absolutely no parking anywhere around. I had to end up leaving my car in the parking lot at Ralph's grocery store, a few blocks away as it was the only place I could find to park the car where it wouldn't get towed. That really was inconvenient.

So I'd just say if you end up in Carmel Valley, make sure your rental has an assigned spot or garage that can't be used by someone else.

Since I'm single, only one spot or garage would be enough. The only way I could have problems is, if at the apartment complex I end up with, you're not given your dedicated parking spot.

Useful tip, thanks!

What if you have frequent visitors? What if you buy a motorbike and/or adventure vehicle? You might wind up wishing you had more than one spot, depending on how tight parking is in the neighborhood where you live. Just something more to consider ...
