Hello everyone,

I have accepted a civilian position with the Dept of the Navy and will work out of the 32nd Street Naval Station.
Unfortunately, I will arrive two days before I start work and that leaves little time to locate a place to live. I have been scouring Craigslist and others for rooms for rent on a short term basis until I get acclimated to the area. I will be car-less and will rely on public transportation; I used to the live in the SF Bay area for 10 years and I'm not squeamish about using PT.
Any tips that you can send my way regarding living areas, share rentals, organic or wholesome grocery stores, MUST-see things and areas, would be greatly appreciated.

I am a mid 40's single male, used to hiking in the foothills of central California.

Here's the public transportation site for San Diego: Transit.511sd.com

Here's the listing of farmers' markets in San Diego: http://sdfarmbureau.org/BuyLocal/Farmers-Markets.php

In addition, you can find good food at places like Whole Foods, Jimbo's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, and some of the ethnic markets.

Maybe you can find an extended-stay room for a month or so, to give you the chance to look around a bit before deciding where to live.

I found our place via craigslist, with a very similar situation a couple of months ago(driving cross country with about 7 days before I started working at MCAS, Miramar. Being single should make it easier unless you have pets. You should be able to find something using a realtor and make sure that you get a sponsor through 32nd street for advice on what areas would be best for you.

Looks like I'll stay at a sleazy motel and look for a place IN PERSON.
Thanks people for the input. The sites I went to had the information or links that I needed to help make decisions. MUCH APPRECIATED!

James

What do you call a sleazy motel? Consider staying at an extended stay motel, it'll be much better.

for $37/night in SD, I call that a sleazy hotel. The extended stays were a bit pricey; on a budget until I find a place.

Are you able to use military facilities? The Navy lodge is approx $60 a night that includes a kitchenette. I checked for availability, and depending upon how many nights, they seem to be full for July, but perhaps there are openings in August or September.
