We are considering a move to the Oceanside, vista, carlsbad area next year from MO. We've been looking at homes and jobs. My first question is what neighborhoods are the safest? We live in one of the nicest neighborhoods in our town and want to feel just as comfortable there. The houses we tend to like are in the shadowridge and Ivey ranch areas. Are these good? Any others to look at?
We are making a trip at the end of this month for 3 nights to explore the area. Other than driving around nieghborhoods what else should we do to get a realistic feel of things?

The Shadowridge area of Vista is nice. Vista just north of I-8 is run-down and seedy.

What about good schools? Is that an issue for you?

I don't see I-8? Is it the same as another highway?
We have no children yet. Probably will start within the year after we move. So other than preschool, schools won't be a concern for at least 6 years.

I think oddstray meant the 78 fwy. The I-8 is too far south.

Shadowridge is good, if you want to go further inland check out San Marcos also. Home sales/rents are more reasonable there.

Yes, I did mean Highway 78 in my earlier post.

While you're in town, pay attention to the traffic reports especially during rush hour. It'll give you some idea of traffic patterns. That might matter, if you want to avoid a bad commute.

If you have no kids and are very concerned with safety, why not just go for Carlsbad and rent a condo or apartment? It's definitely the most expensive of the cities you listed and definitely the nicest and safest (especially the further south you get). But I live in southern Oceanside, below the 78, off of the Emerald turn off, and it's fine here (and cheaper). Ivey Ranch is nice, too. How about the Fire Mountain part of Oceanside? It's quite nice, and close to downtown Oceanside, which in spite of it's seediness, has a great library and an non-touristy beachy feel.
