Hello there . As it says in my username, I'm Brian and I love dogs. Only have one.

I just received notice that I landed a job in Kearny Mesa, start working in February. I know its a ways away but I'm still excited to be working in San Diego. I see on google maps that Kearny Mesa is basically a huge business city, but there's still a few residential areas. However I'm wondering if it would be a good place to rent an apartment or condo?

My budget is $1300 a month, I can go $200 more if need be. I have one dog, not too big, well behaved. I will bringing nearly half of my belongings with me, the other half I will sell or give away.

I think you won't have much of a nightlife living in Kearny Mesa, which may or may not matter to you. You're right ... until recently there was no residential area at all in Kearny Mesa.

What do you want in a neighborhood? Hiking trails? Nightclubs? Child-friendly?

It's an older white neighborhood though most of it is given over to industrial or commercial property.

Look next door to Clairemont or Serra Mesa.

It's good that you won't be starting your job until February. It gives you plenty of time to look around for a place. No rushing.

If you want to socialize with your dog, I would think about places around Balboa Park, downtown, or even the beaches. Your budget is not bad (although you won't be living in luxury either). Having a pet and finding housing can be challenging but not impossible. Kearney Mesa is mostly business parks and a bedroom community. I only go there for work related things and awesome Asian Markets, other than that, meh.

KM doesnt seem like a bad place to rent a condo or apartment. There is a newly developed part of KM called "The Spectrum". During the housing boom they built some decent looking row homes as well as a flurry of apartments complexes in and around that area.

The location puts you in a good spot if you need to travel around. Its not necesarily a place I would like at as a long term housing option, but for getting your feet wet and being close to work, there are better and worse choices.

As moved said, you have a lot of time between now and Feb to scope out areas if you have the time.

You might want to look into the dog park in the area of Ashford/Armstrong. I think it is part of the Kearny Mesa Park and Recreation Center. I know it is a fairly active local dog park.

It is relatively close to Linda Vista, and that can get a bit spotty, but rents should be lower there.

It sounds like you have the time to look around and be choosey, and that would be good for that area.

What type of area do you want to live in?

I lived near the Kearny Mesa/Serra Mesa/Linda Vista (805/163) intersection when I lived in San Diego. It was fine. It wasn't a huge residential area (Serra Mesa is, once you get a bit further into it) and I didn't care too much about bars and clubs, but I loved the great Asian supermarkets and restaurants (many of which are open late.)
