For much of the United States, this says something about Trump. For San Diegans, does this say something about the U-T?

San Diego Newspaper Endorses ... Ronald Reagan

Watching movie Trumbo - I didn't realize Reagan was on the side of the historically-shameful HUAC

The U-T stills leans to the right, even after the change in ownership you'd think they'd be a little more balanced. But it looks like things haven't changed a bit over there.

This actually made me laugh when I heard it. The Union Tribune has been stuck in the 1980s for the last 30 years, so why wouldn't they endorse Reagan? Then I thought: who still cares which candidate a "newspaper" that's on life support endorses?

That's always hit me as funny as well. Wouldn't most people who read a newspaper have enough knowledge to choose who they were going to vote for rather than just saying "Well the Picayune said we should go with this one!"

I've actually found the UT to be more 'balanced' these days, with the occasional throwback piece to conservatism to appease the right-wing base (perhaps to retain subscribers). I do think they are more provocative, certainly, esp. with respect to their op-eds and polls.

I agree. . . and as someone who loves a newspaper, that I can hold in my hand, and enjoy over coffee, as opposed to online news, I love getting the UT for the local info. I am maybe a bit old fashioned that way. I don't know if people's opinions are ever changed by endorsements in the newspaper but I kind of look at it like a journalistic tradition.

Their Reagan endorsement was only for the Republican primary ballot for registered Republicans; not serious, just making a point. It will be interesting to see if anyone did the write in. They also endorsed Clinton for the Democratic primary ballot.
