I am planning to take my almost 6 year old son to San Diego for about a week in early April, we will mostly concentrate on kid's activities, we don't plan to go to Disney world this time.

Rough plan is:

Lego land for a day, zoo for a day, sea world for a day, tour LA for a day. I wonder if anything more interesting thing for a kid missed out here, are there some ways to get a good deal when getting tickets? Is there a museum pass like we have in Boston libraries (we have relatives living there but their kids are all grew up).

Any suggestions is highly appreciated!

Your son might like the aircraft carrier downtown. Maybe even the Star of India, which is a ship with sails.

I think you can get a Zoo/Wild Animal Park pass. The Park is located out east of Escondido on the 78.

You'll also want to check out the beach. Torrey Pines, Silver Strand, and La Jolla Shores are some decent spots, but there are others.

My kids loved the Children's Museum at that age, but it is not really San Diego-specific.

Balboa Park always has activities for kids during the week. Most are free or cheap and parking is very accessible.

My friends just came out from Iowa with their 5-year-old for a week. They went to Legoland, the zoo, Disneyland, the La Brea tarpits in LA, a day downtown at the maritime museum (he was SO excited about being in a submarine!), and some chilling out at the beach. He had an amazing time!

I would leave out the "tour LA" for a day, it will be a waste of time. Depending on traffic, it would take at least three hours to get a destination in LA from San Diego and at least three hours back. Then you will drive yourself crazy in local LA traffic...you would spend the majority of the day in your car.

You see that I mentioned "car"....don't come to Southern California without an arranged car or ride. Mass transit here is not like the East Coast. You need a car.

Other ideas:
Balboa Park
La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Shores
any beach north of the Crystal Pier
Coronado

I would agree and add the Wild Animal Park.

Good suggestion above.
Legoland, Beach, Chula Vista Nature Center, Balboa Park, Tidepooling, Padres Baseball
Skip LA but liked the Tarpits
Enjoy, relax on your vacation and just do ~1 activity per day

All great suggestions! I'd say the Tide Pools at either La Jolla Shores or Point Loma. The USS Midway museum is also pretty cool for a young boy. Balboa Park is always great - either the Air & Space Musuem, the Model Train Museum, or the Science Center are all great. Some Balboa Park museums are free on Tuesdays...I think they have a schedule of which ones are free on which days online. If you do go to LA, La Brea Tar Pits or Universal Studios would be fun - but that is such a long drive, full of traffic!

Yeah, LA isn't really worth a day trip. Overnight, maybe. My friends only went to the tar pits because they flew into LA.

A six year old is right around where you might want to think about going to the Safari Park. My niece was here in the summer and we didn't go there, because we didn't think it would work for her. But she's three...whoops, four today!
