There are exempt and non-exempt positions for the shutdown. Exempt positions and services are not scheduled to shut down. These are emergency response and critical functions of the government:
Air traffic controllers
TSA Agents
Federal law enforcement and safety positions
Military
VA doctors and nurses
and anyone else deemed necessary and their job or mission is life and safety critical.

Non exempt positions are:
clerks and mission support services for the agencies listed above
contract services
non-critical mechanics, engineers, and tradesmen

It is my understanding that the US mail service is exempt in most cases and mail delivery will continue.

I've heard so much contradictory info it's hard to tell. Here's one article:

What You Can and Can't Do During a Government Shutdown | NBC4 Washington

I've heard you can't get a passport, but this article says you probably can. No national parks or smithsonian. No gun permits.

Blame goes to the treasonous (and some rascist) Tea Partiers and GOPers.

Tea Party obstructionism will continue into the future due to gerrymandered congressional districts.

It'd be good if we could figure out some way to kick the obstructionists in their wallet, the way they're kicking the citizens.

My heart goes out to all the affected government workers and such, but on a personal note: My family has Statue of Liberty crown tour tickets in 11 days. They better have this whole mess sorted out by then or I'm gonna be pissed.
