Old Town, though maybe not a neighborhood per se though it once had a neighborhood public elementary school or something and now has a neighborhood charter K-8 school, does have interesting residential sections, mostly adjacent to and contiguous with north Mission Hills, malco-in-the-middle-16.

If I ever lived in San Diego, which is highly unlikely at this point since I love OC, it would be in this order of preference: La Jolla, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said Hillcrest or Bankers Hill (I still like these a little bit). Now I am too old, have worked too hard and am too sick of so-called "hipster" areas where there is any chance I might get hit over the head by some hoodlum. Yes, I realize that no place is immune from violence, but I think certain areas have a higher chance of that happening.

I'm thinking further down the hill from Presidio Park And also behind to the east of the Old Town tourist areas. It is not a bad area, malcorubthis16

Bankers Hill is hipster zone? Ha. Like to see hipsters afford in the hood next to Spruce St. bridge.

The coolest hood in the county is clearly Discovery Hills Adjacent in San Marcos.

La Jolla is the mirror-image of Laguna Beach!

I've lived in both cities.

There are similarities to be sure, but I am not sure I agree they are a mirror-image of one another. I recently took a view in at Mt. Soledad (a place I have been to innumerable times, but not recently) and compared it to a fresh-in-my-mind frequent common visits to the Top of The World. I think the edge, at least view wise, goes to LJ.
