Hello everyone, I am going down to San Diego next week with 3 friends. We will only be there for 1-2 days, 3 days at the absolute most. We want a hotel in or close to downtown San Diego, or a place where a lot of action would be at. We don't have a ton of money to spend on this mini vacation, so we are looking for affordable hotels. At the same time we don't want a crappy motel in a sketchy part of town, though.
Any recommendations? Thanks! :-)

What do you call affordable? If you want to be around the action, you'll want to stay in the Gaslamp District, which is where most of the bars are.

Hmm maybe like $100-$200 tops per night? What would most people call affordable?
I'll check out hotels around there, thanks!

I would call affordable or budget less that $100 dollars a night.

Did you check Orbitz? Almost every hotel shown as Downtown, Little Italy, Gaslamp is in a decent area close to public transportation with easy access to the action and with your budget of $100-$200 dollars per day you have a pretty decent bunch to choose from this time of year.

Why don't you look around like on Kayak, Travelocity...etc and post back here some hotels that interest you and we'll let you know if the area is "sketchy" and if its in a fun area.

At one time, I lived out of state for a while and used to stay at the Lafayette Hotel on El Cajon Blvd in North Park when I came home to visit San Diego.

They have very reasonable rates, great bars and and a very cool restaurant attached. Quick cab ride downtown as well.

Check out the Motel 6 downtown. Another option is Good Nite Inn Sea World location, not far from Old Town Transit Station. You can also find discounted hotels on Hotwire. For example, can often get Wyndham Garden Inn on Sports Arena Blvd. or LaQuinta near Pacific Beach for $65 to $75 per night.

The OP wants to be near the action, and none of the motels listed are close to the Gaslamp District.
