A couple friends will be visiting in a couple weeks and I'd like to take them out for a special dinner. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you provide some general guides for preferences and non-preferences so we can recommend specifics

You'll have to choose a neighborhood in San Diego for a better recommendation. I'll throw one out there just for the hey....
Bluewater, near Old Town. Great fish tacos and always fresh.

See, this is tough because the best food is not always available at the best scenery. The beachfront spots can get by on the view, so they do. So the recommendation would vary based on who your guests are. If they are sophisticated foodies, or just average diners who are happy seeing the sunset over the ocean?

To me there are two genres of food that embody the San Diego culture and lifestyle: Mexican and Seafood.

Why not try both mixed together.....

Karinas
Hectors Mariscos
TJ Oyster
Negro Durazo

That might be true, but not sure any of above places fall in the "special dinner" category--at least to me...lunch, definitely..let's see what OP comes back with in terms of where he is based, type of cuisines they favor and what he is looking to spend per person, with or without drinks. Possible he or she might have something like Addison or Pampelmousse on their mind, in which case above--though good--will not do.

Sorry for omitting some pertinent information. I live in Eastlake and enjoy seafood, Mexican and Italian. Driving to San Diego is not a problem, since I'll be showing my guests the sites anyway. BTW, they are in their early 50s. Wish i could say that about myself. Ha.

A restaurant that I've heard about is La Costerra on Harbor Island. Would this be a good choice?

Depends on whether you have a genre in mind. From Eastlake I'd say Coops, because really truly good BBQ is scarce in San Diego and I love me some good BBQ.
